John V. Gilhooly passed away in his home in Dallas, Texas on February 5, 2013. He was born on October 25, 1929, in Providence, R.I
After college, John spent an enjoyable four and a half years as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, most of it in the Air Training Command in Texas, where he met his future wife, Mary Agnes Ney, a south Texas rancher’s daughter and the love of his life. He and Mary were married on June 15, 1957.
In addition to a wonderful wife, he was blessed with two fine sons, Kevin and Stephen, who gave him a few moments of concern and a lifetime of pride and joy. John and Mary had the pleasure, from time to time, of being hands-on grandparents to their grandson, J. R. Gilhooly.
John served as Assistant General Counsel of two major Dallas-based corporations. He retired as a Senior Vice President on the corporate staff of Texas Instruments.
A lifelong Catholic, he served as President of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish Parents’ Association for a year, as a Eucharistic Minister for many years and, with his wife, served as co-chair of the first capital campaign of the parish since its founding. He also volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Catholic Charities Immigration & Legal Services.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Patrick and Margaret Gilhooly, and his sister, Marguerite Brett (Howard) of Providence,R.I.
He is survived by his widow; his sons, Kevin (Virginia) and Stephen; his grandson, J. R. (Ginger); his great-grandsons, Caleb and Carson; his niece, Claudia Brett, of Providence, RI, and his nephew, Christopher Brett, of Mount Washington, PA.
